Our Story

Guitar Bar has been happy to serve the musicians of Hoboken and the surrounding New Jersey/New York City area since 1996.  Owner and founder James Mastro has been a prominent figure in the Hoboken music scene since the early "glory days" off Maxwell's as a member of The Bongos. He is still an active recording and touring musician who has worked with the likes of Ian Hunter, Patti Smith, John Cale, The Jayhawks, and Robert Plant, to name a few. His experience and knowledge - along with our staff of likewise professionals - are resources that are gladly shared with the customers.

Our shop holds an ever-changing variety of quality new & used items, and unique vintage pieces, too. Need a repair? No problem. You can count on us for expert repairs that will get your axe in tip-top shape.

We offer music lessons for students at all levels in all styles for a wide variety of instruments. Guitar Bar's teachers are some of the best around, and offer students of all ages high quality instruction with rock 'n roll attitude -- that means fun and informative.

In 2010, we added a second location uptown, Guitar Bar Jr. where we offer Karyn Kuhl's LITTLE ROCKnROLLERS kids group classes, in addition to our private lessons for the older set.

This past year we opened up GBDD in Jersey City Heights. It's a partnership with The Drum Den (the coolest drum shop around), so we've made it possible for your band to do all it's shopping in one spot! Along with offering a wide range of instrument lessons and repairs.

For the past four summers, Guitar Bar has been sponsoring a World Record Attempt for The World's Largest Rock Band. Sinatra Park in Hoboken has been the site where we've gathered hundreds of musicians to play together on the Hudson. It's always an amazingly uplifting event, and if you haven't joined us yet, make it a potin to, We can't imagine it'll be too long before we break that record, but in the meantime we'll enjoy the record for most smiles in Hoboken.

Stop into any of our shops, or peruse our inventory online and you'll see why shopping local beats the big box stores every time. We pride ourselves on excellent customer service and our ability to find the right products for musicians at every level.

You'll love the sound you leave our shop with.
